Désirée Olson: Making Magic at BPL
Fueled by my Grandma, who was a voracious reader and an aspiring journalist, and the giant bookshelf that occupied one wall of the living room of my childhood home, I became a lover of books, reading, and learning, at an early age. I was the kid that was always carrying a book, and was most likely hiding under the covers with a flashlight reading past bedtime. At the University of Michigan in Flint (where I met my husband, Matthew), I took brief detours through the Theatre and Biology departments, but eventually returned to my first love and obtained my degree in English.
Prior to becoming a parent to my two sons (age 13 and 10) and daughter (age 6), I spent time in retail management, as a dance instructor and choreographer, as a legal assistant, and as a training specialist (contract employee) for a Big 3 auto maker. For the past several years I’ve worked from home for an executive résumé company in addition to volunteering in the community and acting as chauffeur to my kids.
A little over 2 years ago my family relocated here from the Genesee County area. One of our first stops was to BPL and we fell in love, particularly with the Children’s Room. It is absolutely magical, just like all the books it holds. I’m beyond excited to be able to volunteer for the Story Time program and share my love of books and learning with a new generation.
Miss Désirée brings the magic of reading alive during Story Time, Thursdays, 10:30 am.
