Suds and Civilization: A Social History of Spirits
Presented by
Dr. Thomas Henthorn Sunday, October 15, 2023 2:00-3:00 pm Mills Community House Lower Level 891 Michigan Ave. Michigan Ave., Benzonia Link to Google map > |
Besides being something we enjoy, alcoholic beverages are also great examples of how people learned to deliberately manipulate chemical and biological processes in order to get a particular outcome - beginning even before the civilizations of ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt. Beer, wine, mead and liquor are great inventions that remind us how humans use things to shape social order, convey cultural meanings and that technology is not just about the inorganic but also the organic.
Dr. Thomas Henthorn is the Wyatt Endowed Professor of Public History at the University of Michigan-Flint. His research and teaching interests examine the intersection of public history and urban history.

The word gyotaku (pronounced gee-oh-tah-koo) comes from gyo = fish and taku = rubbing. In the Mid 19th century, Japanese fishermen began making "fish prints" as a way of recording the exact size and species they caught. No fish stories here, but this eventually became a traditional Japanese art form and can be used to identify fish species and anatomy.
